It was written for a specific purpose and with a specific audience in mind. Now, a word of warning to the modern reader: A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is a dense read. Wollstonecraft also discusses many other complex ethical issues about the role of women in society, but this reading focuses mainly on the relationship between education, liberty, virtue and gender. Wollstonecraft argues that girls should receive the same education as boys and that an improved education is necessary for women to assert their right as “human creatures” and to develop their potential as rational and virtuous individuals. Rousseau claimed that because women are weaker and less rational than men, girls and boys should be educated separately and differently. Her main target is the Swiss-born French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
